11/9/2023 0 Comments Dosbox output overlayThis can cause the overlay to seem to stop responding or sometimes just crash.” “The problem arises in how the Steam Overlay interacts with only partial updates.” “If the game is not updating the whole frame then the overlay won’t either as it relies upon the DosBox’s pipeline to the GPU to update itself. But “the way DosBox updates the frames is not typical for most apps or games.” What it does is only updates the parts of the screen that have made a change. As Kevin puts it “The Steam Overlay, which is required for proper Steam Controller usage, injects itself into the render pipeline of the game, in this case, DosBox.”. The second is that even when switching to an output that Steam can hook into, the overlay is extremely sluggish, with most FPS counters reading 1-2 FPS. This results in the problem where games run through DosBox will use the Desktop Config rather than an application specific config. To start with, what exactly are the two issues that are preventing the use of the Steam Controller with DosBox? The primary issues is that DosBox, by default, doesn’t use a display output that Steam can hook into. As usual with my videos, timestamps are located in the description for those wanting to jump between chapters or topics in the video. I’ll explain at the end why I’m not including a method for getting this to work with Dos games purchased through Steam. While the core information will be identical to the guide, I will be expanding on the source material to explain how to easily set this up for Dos games with their original files as well as Dos games purchased through GOG. A link to the guide can be found in the description for those wanting to peruse through that as well. I discovered this method via a Steam Guide that was written by Kevin Connolly and, with their permission, will be presenting that method in this video. I have discovered a single method that makes the two work perfectly. It doesn’t take many attempts at making them cooperate to come to this conclusion. But I never could go from new to old (retired EF2000 many times after playing FreeFalcon and MSFS 2004, too hard looking back). The Steam Controller does not work very well with DosBox at all. It's like reading a book (currently almost finished with Larry Bond's Cauldron.recommended), you have to let your imagination fill in the visuals. I've long retired my post-DOS-era games (except AOE I) so I'm use to 320x200 and 640x480 (or 640x400). They're both just too old now to even attempt to get back into for me.Įvening hours atmosphere in F-14FD are what I expected from the talent that went on to make Jane's F/A-18.Īnd Tornado's mission planning is every bit as comprehensive as I'd always read about.Īs far as being too old, I believe it's what you're use to. Never got to try Tornado though unfortunately. I'm just glad it's all finally working fine now, I'm busy tonight printing Manuals and reference cards. So I don't know, I may try later to make more standard revisions. Mapperfile=mapper.txt mapperfile=mapper-0.74.map # Lines in this section will be run at startup.īut the odd thing is that F-117 (since the latest patch) is also working perfectly now, yet it changes many settings back to stock. Mapperfile=mapper-0.74.map mapperfile=mapper.txt What I've deduced is that the current Subwar 2050 Config is the best solution, after changing output= from surface to overlay. Add Evasive Action as now working properly, also applies to my laptop. I just need to document the tweaks by GOG and whatever I may have done in addition and I'll post my findings later on this thread. So after all this time I seem to have finally hit the 'magic' DOSBox config settings that allows these games to run smoothly on my PC (and possibly my laptop, much more experimenting to do tonight). Flew around in both and they're running silky smooth! I freaking can't believe it! So then I copied my Tornado and Fleet Defender game folders to my Subwar folder and did the same thing. I copied over the self-running Subwar demo, started and the then exited Subwar to the DOS prompt to continue using the tweaked GOG Config settings, started the demo and it worked perfectly too! Holy crap, I played for a while to confirm that everything would continue running smoothly on full graphics. It started with a DOSBox Config tweak that somehow fixed Subwar 2050 (another first, such a good day I'm having! ). I don't know exactly why this works yet but for the first time EVER I have both Tornado and F-14FD running smoothly under DOSBox!
